Jim and Sally Saxton, long-term YMCA supporters, came to the Community Foundation because they wanted to make an even bigger impact on the organization they love.

They created the James W. and Sally C. Saxton Opportunity Fund to benefit the YMCA. The fund will support the Y in meeting the most critical community needs as determined on an annual basis. Recognizing that community needs will change over time – and that the Y must remain creative and flexible in its approach to serving the mind, body and spirit of Lancaster – the Saxtons' created a permanently endowed fund with the future in mind. The fund may support youth and after school programs, nurturing the Christian potential of children, or strengthening and supporting families.

The Lancaster YMCA Foundation

Permanently Preserving the Experiences and Values of the Lancaster Family YMCA

In Lancaster County, 9,462 children lived in high poverty neighborhoods in 2008 (US Census ACS survey). The same survey showed that 24% of families in Lancaster City are living in poverty! According to the School District of Lancaster's 2010 Annual Community Report, the district serves over 900 homeless students over the course of the year. And a 2010 survey of YMCA youth center participants showed that a staggering 23% of the children have at least one parent incarcerated. The Lancaster Y works to empower people and communities to learn, grow and thrive -- serving individuals, families, and all of Lancaster County -- not just those who can afford to pay. That's where the Lancaster YMCA Foundation fits into the picture. On an annual basis, income earned by the YMCA Foundation Endowment Fund provides financial assistance and other key support to the Lancaster Family Y.

  • The mission of the Lancaster YMCA Foundation is to provide a consistently increasing endowment to support the Lancaster Family YMCA.
  • The purpose of the Lancaster YMCA Foundation is to provide and serve as stewards of an endowment that will preserve the mission and services of the Lancaster Family YMCA.
